The price for Search Engine Optimization (SEO )services can be hard to comprehend. You may hear pricing as low as $250 a month all the way to $10,000+ per month. But, to understand what a fair price for SEO is, it helps to know what is involved in SEO activities.
Relative Cost of Different SEO Activities
When an agency prices SEO services, it takes into account a few broad categories
Technical SEO Prices
This involves, as the name states, technical aspects of a site. How fast does it load, how large are the files, and does it get through Google’s CORE metrics quickly enough? Typically, this is done at the very start of an engagement and then reviewed periodically. One of the challenges in this activity is that many clients are limited in how well they can address technical issues. Can you change servers to make it faster? Do you have the bandwidth, knowledge, or budget to fix code issues? There are often technical issues left unaddressed.

The technical review is pretty straightforward and can cost anywhere from $100 – $500, depending on the size of the website.
Where it can get expensive is fixing the issues uncovered during the review. For sites in WordPress, you might be able to address some of them with special plugins for compressing images, minifying code, caching pages, etc. Fixing issues can range from $0 if your site is in good shape to $1000’s.
The thing to keep in mind is that not every issue needs to be addressed. Expect a review and “necessary” fixes to be $500- $750.
On-Page SEO Costs
The price for on-page SEO depends on 1) the number of pages and 2) how far off the mark the current content is. An estimate for pages that are just a bit off and need some content revisions is about $200 base to set up and $50/page. The thing is, this doesn’t need to be done all at once. The priority pages can be done as part of the setup, then the remaining page over time.
The thing about on-page SEO is that it is not a once-and-done activity. Page SERPs need to be monitored to see if the changes have made a difference. If so, keep them. If not, or if they did and then things decline again, new content changes need to be introduced. Ongoing, expect $20+/ per page as part of the monitoring and possible change requirements.
There will be months in which no changes are required. But when there are, SEOs have to spend a fair amount of time investigating the options and making the best recommendations.
Monitoring & Reporting Costs
This depends on how many pages and search terms must be reviewed monthly and the KW difficulty. The more dynamic/competitive a search term (kw) is in the SERPS, the more time it takes to assess the importance of changes we see, how others are ranking, and what we need to do to help boost our results. Minimally, expect $150/month for monitoring and reporting.
Link Building Costs
Link building is tricky. The sites targeted for links have to mirror the internet and not simply be all high-ranking sites/pages. The concept is a “natural link” profile. How would a site’s inbound links look over a long period of time if it just grew without active link building? That has to be part of the goal.
Another aspect is the speed of link building. Set up too many linking partners too fast, and Google will ignore much of it…not give you credit. Go too slow, and you miss out on building signals.
Linking costs can vary, but expect time costs to be a few hundred dollars a month with a target of 2-3 links. You can go for more links, and most do. But, the base of 2-3 gives you an idea.
Local Citation Building Costs
If you’re a brick-and-mortar business, your Name, Address, Phone Number, and website should appear on sites across the internet. The correctness and consistency of how it appears are important. If search engines see conflicting data when they crawl the web, it can degrade your rankings. Expect to pay $50-$150/month for citation management. There may be little to do in some months, while others may require more outreach. Over time, if your information remains consistent and the base clean-up is done, the effort should decrease.
